Clay Paste and Indigo Two-Part Workshop

Join us for a workshop in our studio space!  

Part 1: Clay Resist (Indigo): Workshop participants will learn how to prepare and apply clay resist techniques to fabric prior to dyeing in a natural indigo vat.  Join us to explore different application techniques to create designs, repeating patterns, etc.  In Part 1 of this class, workshop participants will prepare and decorate fabrics using clay resist to ensure proper drying time before introducing fiber into the indigo vat in Part 2. Workshop participants will be able to choose between a variety of materials for dyeing: a bandana, pillowcase, cloth napkins, tote bag or a piece of cotton fabric yardage.  

Part 2: Indigo Vat Dyeing:  In this class, workshop participants will learn about natural indigo and will dye their previously prepared fabrics from Part 1 in the natural indigo vat.   After several dips, we will rinse out our clay resists to reveal our fabric designs! If time allows, participants may also bring 1 x article of clothing, fabric, etc. from home to dye in the vat using a folded or scrunch technique to create a resist design.  All fabric should be 100% natural fiber like cotton, linen. 

Each participant will go home with their own custom made, unique, clay resist, indigo dyed piece!

All materials included and supplied:

• 1 x a bandana, pillowcase, cloth napkins, tote bag or a piece of cotton fabric yardage.   (there might be additional options)

• Clay Paste and all tools for application

• indigo vat and other materials

• Information about the process and results.

• light refreshments

Our workshops are located in our upper Lawrenceville studio. There are 3 steps to the front door. Please email with any accessibility questions and we will do our best to accommodate your needs. Thank you!

This workshop is for participants 18 and older unless accompanied by an adult. Please email us with questions regarding anyone younger than 18.

For a full refund, cancellations must be made 7 days in advance. If you need to cancel after this, then we will do our best to fill the spot and if we do, then we will offer you a gift certificate for a future workshop or product. You are welcome to transfer or gift the workshop slot to someone in the event you are unable to make it .

Our workshops require a minimum of 4 participants in order to be held. If a workshop does not meet this minimum, you will be notified ahead of time and will receive a full refund.
